MachineGames Confirms Wolfenstein 3 Is Inevitable

I have been waiting for this news for what feels like an eternity. If you are anything like me, you played Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, watched the credits roll, and immediately thought, “Okay, surely the finale is coming soon, right?”

Well, “soon” turned into years of silence, a co-op spinoff that divided fans (Youngblood), and a massive detour into the world of archaeology with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. But finally, the silence has broken. MachineGames has confirmed that Wolfenstein 3 is not a matter of “if,” but “when.”

Here is why I think this is the best news for single-player shooter fans in years.

The Trilogy Was Always the Plan

For a while, I was genuinely worried that the studio had moved on. With the massive success and licensing weight of Indiana Jones, it would have been easy for MachineGames to become “The Disney Adventure Studio.”

But Jerk Gustafsson, the studio director at MachineGames, recently put those fears to rest. He made it crystal clear: The team views Wolfenstein as a trilogy. They have a story to finish, and they aren’t leaving B.J. Blazkowicz in limbo.

Gustafsson’s comments were refreshing. He didn’t give us a marketing spin; he just admitted that while they took a break to whip Nazis with Indy, their hearts never left the original mission.

“It could happen now, or it could happen later. But we are not done with this series.”

To me, this confirms that the narrative arc set up in The New Order was always meant to have a definitive, explosive conclusion. We need to see how the revolution ends.

Why the Timing Makes Sense Now

You might be asking, “Why confirm it now?”

I think there are two massive factors at play here:

1. The “Indiana Jones” Breather: The studio just wrapped up a massive project. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle allowed them to flex different muscles—puzzles, exploration, and melee combat. But now that the game is out (and heading to platforms like the rumored Nintendo Switch 2), the core team needs a new focus. Returning to their flagship FPS roots feels like the natural next step.

2. The Amazon MGM TV Series: This is the big one. We know that a Wolfenstein TV series is in the works at Amazon MGM Studios. If we look at how Fallout and The Last of Us exploded in popularity because the games and shows supported each other, it’s a no-brainer. I would bet good money that MachineGames is aiming to time the release—or at least the reveal—of Wolfenstein 3 to coincide with the hype of the TV show. It’s the perfect cross-media storm.

Rumors vs. Reality

Last month, I saw some leaks suggesting that Wolfenstein 3 was already deep in development. While Gustafsson was careful not to give a specific release date, saying “now or later,” his confidence suggests they aren’t starting from zero.

My gut feeling? They likely have the script, the concept art, and the engine ready. The id Tech engine is a beast, and they know how to use it better than anyone. They don’t need to reinvent the wheel; they just need to build the levels.

What I Want From the Finale

If this really is the end of the trilogy, I have high expectations.

  • No Live Service Nonsense: I want a tight, 15-20 hour narrative. No battle passes, no daily logins. Just pure, chaotic storytelling.
  • Mecha-Hitler: Come on, we all know it has to happen. The classic games did it, and this modern trilogy needs to go there.
  • Closure for B.J.: The man has been through hell. He deserves a proper send-off.

Final Thoughts

It’s rare for a studio to commit to a “trilogy” structure in today’s gaming landscape, where everything is about “endless platforms.” Hearing MachineGames say they are committed to finishing the story is a breath of fresh air.

I’m ready to dual-wield shotguns again.

Are you excited to jump back into the boots of Terror Billy, or did the long wait between games kill your hype for the franchise? Let me know what you think!
